Centipede Control: Why Centipedes Are in Your Home and How to Remove Them

Understanding House Centipedes

House centipedes are one of the most alarming-looking pests that homeowners encounter, with their long, multi-segmented bodies and numerous legs that allow them to move at surprising speed. Despite their unsettling appearance, house centipedes are actually beneficial predators that feed on cockroaches, spiders, silverfish, ants, and other small household pests.

However, their presence in your home typically indicates a larger pest problem, as centipedes go where their food source is. If you are seeing centipedes regularly, there is likely an underlying insect population that is attracting and sustaining them.

Centipede Behavior and Habitat

House centipedes prefer cool, damp, dark environments. They are commonly found in basements, crawl spaces, bathrooms, and utility areas. They are nocturnal and typically hide during the day in cracks, behind baseboards, and in other secluded spots. They are fast runners and will quickly flee when exposed.

While house centipedes can bite in self-defense, they rarely do so, and their bite is generally no more painful than a minor bee sting. They are not aggressive toward humans and pose no meaningful health risk.

Controlling Centipedes

Because centipedes are predators, the most effective long-term control strategy is to eliminate the insects they are feeding on. Reducing cockroach, spider, silverfish, and ant populations through comprehensive pest control removes the centipede's food source and naturally reduces their numbers.

Moisture management is equally important. Repairing leaks, improving ventilation in crawl spaces and basements, and using dehumidifiers in damp areas makes your home less hospitable to centipedes and many of the pests they prey on.

Perimeter treatments and targeted applications in centipede harborage areas provide additional control. Sealing cracks, gaps, and openings in the foundation and around entry points reduces the pathways centipedes use to enter the home.

Our centipede control services address the whole picture: the centipedes, the prey insects attracting them, and the moisture conditions supporting both.
