Hornet Control

Hornet Control in Hampton Roads

Hornets are among the most aggressive stinging insects in Virginia, and Hampton Roads' warm, humid climate provides ideal conditions for large colonies to establish themselves around homes and businesses. A single hornet nest can house hundreds of workers that will aggressively defend their territory, making hornets a serious concern for families, employees, customers, and pets.

Hornets Common to Hampton Roads

Two hornet species are most frequently encountered in the Newport News and Hampton Roads area:

  • Bald-Faced Hornets — These black-and-white hornets build large, football-shaped paper nests in trees, shrubs, under eaves, and on the sides of buildings. Colonies can grow to 400 or more workers by late summer. Bald-faced hornets are extremely territorial and will sting repeatedly if they perceive a threat near their nest.
  • European Hornets — The only true hornet species in North America, European hornets are large, brown-and-yellow insects that nest inside wall voids, hollow trees, attics, and outbuildings. Unlike most stinging insects, European hornets are active at night and are attracted to exterior lighting, which often brings them into direct contact with homeowners.

Problems Hornets Create for Homeowners

Hornet nests near entry doors, walkways, patios, and play areas put your family at risk every time they step outside. Unlike honeybees, hornets can sting multiple times without dying, and their venom can cause severe allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Nests built inside wall voids and attics can also cause moisture damage and attract secondary pests like carpet beetles and ants that feed on dead insects and nest debris.

Problems for Business Owners

For commercial properties, hornet nests near customer entrances, outdoor dining areas, loading docks, or signage create liability risks and can drive away customers. Restaurants, retail stores, hotels, schools, and property management companies across Hampton Roads rely on Commonwealth to keep their properties sting-free.

Professional Nest Removal

Hornet nest removal is dangerous and should never be attempted without professional equipment and training. Our IPM-certified technicians wear protective gear and use targeted treatments to eliminate the colony quickly and effectively. We treat the nest, remove it when accessible, and apply residual treatments to discourage rebuilding in the same location.

Hornet Control Is a Separate Service

Because of the specialized precautions involved, hornet removal is not included in our standard quarterly pest maintenance plans. Hornet services are quoted and scheduled separately based on nest size, location, and accessibility.
