Fly Control: Identifying and Eliminating Common Fly Species in Your Home

Why Flies Are a Health Concern

Flies are among the filthiest pests that enter our homes. They feed and breed on decaying organic matter, garbage, animal waste, and other unsanitary materials, then land on food, kitchen counters, and dining surfaces. Each time a fly lands, it can transfer bacteria including Salmonella, E. coli, and other pathogens that cause foodborne illness. In commercial food service environments, fly problems can result in health code violations and damage to your reputation.

Common Fly Species in Hampton Roads

House Flies are the most common fly species found indoors. They are gray with four dark stripes on their thorax and are strong fliers that enter through open doors, windows, and damaged screens. House flies are attracted to food odors, garbage, and pet waste and can complete their life cycle in as little as seven days in warm conditions.

Fruit Flies are tiny, tan flies that swarm around overripe fruit, fermenting liquids, and drains. They are a particular nuisance in kitchens and bars. Fruit flies can breed in surprisingly small amounts of organic material, including the thin film inside drain pipes, mop bucket residue, and forgotten produce.

Drain Flies are small, fuzzy, moth-like flies that emerge from drains, sewage systems, and areas with stagnant water. They breed in the organic film that builds up inside drain pipes and are often found in bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms. Their presence usually indicates a moisture or drainage issue.

Cluster Flies are slightly larger than house flies and enter homes in the fall seeking shelter for the winter. They congregate in attics, wall voids, and around south-facing windows. While they do not breed indoors or pose a direct health risk, their numbers can be overwhelming in affected homes.

Professional Fly Control Strategies

Effective fly control requires identifying the species and addressing the source of the problem. For house flies, sanitation improvements and exclusion are the primary strategies, supplemented by targeted treatments. For fruit and drain flies, eliminating breeding sites is essential because no amount of trapping will resolve the problem if the source remains active.

Our fly control service begins with identifying the species and locating breeding sources. We then implement targeted treatments including residual applications to resting surfaces, baiting in appropriate areas, and recommendations for sanitation and exclusion improvements that prevent flies from returning.

For commercial kitchens and food service operations, we provide comprehensive fly management programs that meet health department standards and include ongoing monitoring with light traps and glue boards.
