Silverfish Control: Protecting Your Home and Belongings From Silverfish Damage

What Are Silverfish

Silverfish are small, wingless insects with distinctive silvery-gray scales and a fish-like movement pattern that gives them their name. They are teardrop-shaped, about half an inch to three-quarters of an inch long, and move quickly when disturbed. Silverfish are nocturnal and prefer dark, humid environments, which is why they are often encountered in bathrooms, basements, attics, and kitchens.

While silverfish do not bite or spread disease, they cause damage to personal belongings by feeding on paper, cardboard, book bindings, wallpaper paste, photographs, fabrics containing starch, and other cellulose-based materials. They can also damage clothing, particularly items stored in damp conditions.

Signs of a Silverfish Problem

Because silverfish are nocturnal and fast-moving, you may not see them directly. Instead, look for small, irregular holes or surface scraping damage on paper, books, and stored documents. Yellowish stains on fabric or paper can indicate feeding activity. Small, dark fecal pellets resembling ground pepper may be found in drawers, on shelves, and in storage areas. Shed skins are another indicator, as silverfish molt throughout their lives.

What Attracts Silverfish

Moisture is the primary attractant for silverfish. They require high humidity to survive and are most commonly found in areas with relative humidity above 75 percent. Leaky pipes, condensation, poor ventilation, and damp basements and crawl spaces create ideal silverfish habitat. Starchy food sources including paper, cardboard boxes, books, photographs, and natural-fiber clothing sustain silverfish populations once they are established.

Treating Silverfish Infestations

Professional silverfish control targets both the insects and the conditions that support them. Residual insecticide treatments are applied to harborage areas including behind baseboards, in closets, attic spaces, and under bathroom fixtures. Dust formulations applied to wall voids and enclosed spaces provide long-lasting control in areas where silverfish hide.

Moisture reduction is essential for long-term success. Repairing plumbing leaks, improving ventilation in bathrooms and attics, using dehumidifiers, and ensuring crawl spaces have proper vapor barriers all help create an environment that silverfish cannot thrive in.

Reducing food sources by storing documents and photographs in sealed plastic containers, replacing cardboard storage boxes with plastic bins, and keeping closets and storage areas clean and organized removes the materials silverfish feed on.

Our silverfish control services combine targeted treatment with practical recommendations for moisture and food source reduction.
